Happy Birthday Linux?

It's hard to know exactly what is the official birthday for Linux (since there is the time that Linux started working on it, and when the first code was posted), so I guess we can just celebrate Linux's birthday a couple of times a year if we want. I saw a post by John 'Maddog' Hall on the GNHLUG Mailing list which mentions that today is the day that Linux was first posted to the net. Sounds like a reason to celebrate to me!

Here's the text:

Hi,

While there are several concepts of when Linux was "born", certainly one of
them is September 17, 1991 when the first tarball of code was posted on the
net:

linux-0.01.tar.gz

before this, the name of the system was supposed to be "Freax"

For those newer to Linux and Free and Open Source Software, there is a brief
history of those early moments written by Linus himself at this URL:

Warmest regards,

md
